1:1 Wellness Training with your Therapeutic Specialist

As a therapeutic specialist I have undergone an extensive training to understand the body at the deepest level so I can bring one-on-one yoga therapeutics practice to you and work within healthcare settings to support a variety of illnesses and injuries. A Yoga Medicine® Therapeutic Specialist's job is not to treat or diagnose, but rather to complement your current medical treatment plan with personalized yoga to meet your needs. The Yoga Medicine® curriculum takes a deep dive into the human body so that your Therapeutic Specialist is prepared to work with healthcare professionals and to holistically understand your needs. Many of the Yoga Medicine® courses are taught by healthcare providers and researchers.

We will intertwine complementary concepts and work synergistically with healthcare practitioners to maximize therapeutic outcomes and facilitate a well-rounded and holistic approach to wellness.

In your session we will go over therapeutic practices to break free from the one-size-fits-all model of prescriptive practice and apply a medical knowledge of the body to yoga for more intentional and meaningful results. Injury rehabilitation and prevention, plus tools and techniques to optimize mobility, build intelligent strength, and promote peak physical function and balance. Learn how to efficiently and effectively use yoga and Sports Medicine to support optimal mental health, nervous system regulation, female reproductive balance, and so much more.

If you are wanting to move with less pain, recover from stress or trauma, get better sleep or have more coping tools for illness please message me and let's see how we can work together and add to your current medical program.

Therapy sessions are done in a private setting. As a Therapeutic Specialist I will do a thorough intake to get to know you and your concerns. Depending on the nature of your issue there may be a physical evaluation as well to determine the best course of action for treatment.

Once we’ve decided on a course of action, we will begin the process of learning the practices to help with your condition. Usually, you will be given practices or exercises to work on outside of the session and will have follow up appointments to make sure things are improving for you.

This could be practicing a certain pose at home to relieve stress and muscle tension, breathing exercises to calm the mind, nutrition to aid in better digestion or combination of other yoga practices to promote overall wellbeing.

Yoga therapy is useful for many different areas, ranging from physical pain to mental health conditions. It can be used as assistance for relief for a plethora of conditions, including (but not limited to):

Physical Conditions

  • Back pain

  • Hip or Knee pain

  • Shoulder injuries

  • Diabetes

  • High blood pressure

  • Asthma

  • COPD

  • Autoimmune disorders

Mental Health Conditions

  • Anxiety disorders

  • PTSD

  • Insomnia

  • Depression

  • Addiction

  • ADHD

  • Eating Disorders

  • Postpartum depression

Yoga therapy can act as a useful adjunct to the western medical model or as a stand-alone therapy depending on the condition and/or the skill and experience of the Yoga Therapist.

The biggest difference between a yoga class and a yoga therapy session is that yoga therapy is tailored to suit each individual’s needs.

Yoga for Trauma : Working 1:1 to build inner trust and coping mechanism

It’s safe to say that at one point or another, all of us have felt stress in our lives. But what makes everyday stress different from trauma? Trauma refers to an event that overwhelms our ability to cope and respond. When we experience trauma, we feel helpless, hopeless, and out of control.

A person is traumatized when they can’t bring their mind and body back into balance after the event is over. In other words, if you experience a stressful event that you do not recover from, then that event is traumatic.

Understanding trauma matters.

As a source of long-term stress, trauma that remains unresolved can impact our physical, emotional, mental and behavioral state. For people who have experienced trauma, there can be long-lasting, chronic effects on how they think, feel, and behave, as well as on their overall health. Understanding how trauma shows up in the brain, and in the body, allows us to address its symptoms, such as depression and anxiety. Anyone could be faced with a traumatic event, but a person is considered “at risk” if they are likely to have gone through trauma without having enough resources to deal with that trauma. In the end, it is resources that decide how a person is able to respond or react to trauma.

Resilience refers to the ability for a person to recover quickly from difficulty or cope with stress. Trauma-informed yoga builds resilience by connecting you with inner resources that helps you to work through your discomfort, understand your experience, and separate your feelings from their actions. Even more, yoga can help release pent up tension and trauma, so that you can move on both mentally and physically.

What we focus on:

THE SOUL: PLAYING WELL

Intuitive exercise is joyful movement. Learning to select movements that feel good to your body, are fun, and help you feel empowered. Additionally by focusing on moving our bodies for the sake of our well-being versus weight loss. we can reap the rewards of joyful movement. You will feel more energized, happier, promote heart health, and since we are having joy we will move more often.

tHE bODY: Eating Well

We have been so deeply influenced by diet culture that what we think and believe affects the way we feel about food. This in turn affects our behavior (what we do around food). Restriction, binge eating, tracking your food intake(either counting calories or only allowing yourself to eat at certain times) causes feelings of anxiety around food. This is not how we want to live the rest of our lives is it? I know for me it was no way to show love and respect to my body. The good new is that what we think and believe is a choice. So we can learn to uproot diet cultures influence. Then the way you feel and act around food will subsequently change and help you find food freedom. I work closely with you in my 1:1 Food Freedom Program to teach you how to respect your body through food choices, movement and self-talk. Feeling good on the inside helps you feel good about yourself on the outside, and in turn improves body image and confidence.  We can learn to uproot diet cultures influence. Then the way you feel and act around food will subsequently change and help you find food freedom.

THE MIND: Living Well

By looking at the bigger picture of our lives, those who work with me are able to move away from diet and fitness industry culture that causes them to obsess over food and their body, and instead focus their energy on their life values. Let us find worth in who we are as people and in what really matters, family, self care, and what ever you truly value.

FAQs

What can you expect from theraputic sessions?

Therapeutic yoga refers to the application of techniques and practices to support people facing physical and mental health challenges. You can expect to learn techniques for better sleep and how to cope and function well with stress.

We live in a society that praises those who never rest and stay occupied constantly. Rest is viewed as weakness. However our bodies thrive on rest. In your therapeutic setting you will learn how to rewire your anatomic nervous system (non-voluntary functions) so when life gets hectic we can respond with thought and reason rather than impulse and reaction. You’ll be guided through restorative techniques to aid with improved sleep patterns, better digestion, and mental and physical introspection.

We also apply gentle movement patterns to help with any areas of pain in the body. Learn a little about your anatomy and specific movement patterns to help your body function at its best.

Ageing does not mean we have to accept pain. We can aid our bodies in re-hydration, nourishment, and better movement patterns.
